Vice President JD Vance’s allies fear he’s facing a “coordinated” operation within the Republican Party to “poison” his political future and 2028 chances.
The Washington Post’s Natalie Allison reported on Friday about an unusual amount of social media hate being thrown Vance’s way in recent weeks, seemingly boiling over after a recent appearance on Joe Rogan’s podcast where Vance criticized the relationship between Israel and the United States and described himself as a “moderate.”
Allison reported that Vance is “facing a barrage of online attacks from within his party, criticism his allies say appears to be part of a coordinated attempt to poison the well for him politically.”
An unusual element to the social media backlash — which includes “Never Vance”-type slogans, criticism of Iran negotiations, and comparisons to liberals like Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) — is that Vance’s polling among Republicans has remained relatively steady and aligned with President Donald Trump’s numbers.
Allison wrote:
The sustained public hostility from Vance’s own side of the aisle is unlike that faced by other vice presidents in decades, both in intensity and in the early timing — two years before the party will choose its next presidential nominee. The unusual nature is a product of the central role that social media plays in today’s political discourse, as well as the high stakes as Republicans prepare to select a new standard-bearer after Trump, Vance allies and critics say.
Multiple Vance allies suggested a “coordinated” operation being deployed against Vance in the hopes of spoiling 2028 for him and making way for a more establishment-friendly candidate.
One close ally claimed it’s “obvious to anyone with an IQ above 70” that the social media attacks are “totally inauthentic and probably coordinated to a certain extent,” also citing Vance’s approval rating not cratering amid the jumpstart in online hate.
Allison noted that “some of the users who pledged to oppose Vance and support [Secretary of State Marco] Rubio in 2028 had profiles that strongly suggested they aren’t American voters and are based in other countries.”
During his Rogan interview, Vance did reference an online campaign against him. He also suggested that campaign has aimed to spoil negotiations between the U.S. and Iran. Conservatives like Tomi Lahren and Fox News’ Lawrence Jones were among the critics blasting Vance over his Rogan appearance.
The vice president specifically referenced a Time report about Brad Parscale, who briefly ran Trump’s 2020 reelection campaign, and his company Clock Tower X being paid by Israel to run an influence campaign online.
“I definitely think you have seen this very discreet, extremely well-funded campaign to try to derail the negotiation and try to derail the deal,” Vance said.
