Balgarianovinite.com Varna Day is being celebrated on August 15 with concerts, sports events and other initiatives across the city. The programme traditionally begins with a solemn Holy Mass at the Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral, followed by a military ceremony and the raising of the flags of Bulgaria, Varna Municipality and the European Union.
Throughout the day, sports events and demonstrations are taking place at Asparuhovo beach as part of the second edition of the Sea Fest, with activities also scheduled around the Sea Station and the city’s port.
Regional Governor Mario Smarkov said in his address that Varna has the potential to become one of Bulgaria’s most developed and modern cities, but achieving this requires clear priorities, good governance, consistency and work measured by tangible results.
He stressed that the city needs forward-looking solutions, responsible management of public funds and institutions that listen to people and respond to their concerns. Smarkov said Varna residents could be proud of the city’s history, culture, people and potential, but the holiday should also be an occasion to look honestly at what still needs to be done.
He underlined the need for joint efforts by local and central government, businesses and citizens, adding that as regional governor he would continue working to secure the necessary State support for major infrastructure projects, attract investment, develop the economy and improve living conditions in the region.
The cultural programme includes an awards ceremony for distinctions of Varna Municipality, followed by a concert featuring Varna Ensemble and pop singer Orlin Pavlov. The Varna Opera orchestra, conducted by Nayden Todorov, will perform pieces by Bizet, Mozart, Verdi, Dvorak, Rossini and Lehar in the city centre in the evening, while the main evening concert in the Sea Garden will feature Bulgarian performers and groups, including Eurovision winner Dara.
