Vazrazhdane Opposes Iva Mihaylova’s Extradition to North Macedonia, Citing Need for Medical Treatment 2026

The Vazrazhdane parliamentary group is firmly opposed to the extradition of Iva Mihaylova to the Republic of North Macedonia, saying it would be unjust, according to a declaration read from the parliamentary rostrum by MP Kosta Stoyanov. A human life takes precedence over all procedures and legal disputes, he said.
On Tuesday, the authorities of the Republic of North Macedonia issued an international arrest warrant for the 23-year-old Mihaylova, a dual citizen of Bulgaria and North Macedonia, who Stoyanov said openly identifies as Bulgarian. Mihaylova has not been convicted but is facing charges in connection with a road accident in October last year, in which she herself sustained serious spinal injuries. She now faces the risk of permanent disability and needs specialized medical treatment, he noted.
Mihaylova is now in Bulgaria and receiving medical care. Instead of finding a solution that would allow her to receive treatment while the criminal proceedings continued normally, the authorities in Skopje had taken steps to detain her and issue an international arrest warrant, Stoyanov said. The Vazrazhdane parliamentary group considers these measures disproportionate.
“No one is insisting that Iva be placed above the law, but criminal proceedings must not become an obstacle to the treatment she needs,” Stoyanov said.
The Vazrazhdane parliamentary group called on the Bulgarian Government to provide Mihaylova with the necessary legal, diplomatic and consular protection. It also urged the Justice Ministry and the Interior Ministry to inform Parliament of the steps they had taken in connection with the international warrant and any potential requests for her detention and extradition, the MP said.
Vazrazhdane also called on the Foreign Ministry to state Bulgaria’s official position to Skopje and seek assurances that Mihaylova’s health would be taken into account in any subsequent action by the institutions of the Republic of North Macedonia, Stoyanov said.
His party also demanded information on the steps being taken to enforce the sentences against former North Macedonian prime minister Nikola Gruevski, a longtime leader of the party currently in power in the Republic of North Macedonia. In 2018, Gruevski left his country to avoid serving a final sentence, and further convictions were subsequently handed down against him, Stoyanov said.
Gruevski remains in Hungary, and requests for his extradition have yet to be acted upon, he added. Over the past eight years, Skopje has shown no diplomatic activity comparable to its current response in the case of Mihaylova, Stoyanov noted.
“It is political hypocrisy on the part of the Republic of North Macedonia to turn a blind eye to Gruevski’s crimes involving millions, while accusing an innocent Bulgarian girl who was hit by a car that crossed into her lane from the oncoming traffic lane, and denying her treatment that she needs to avoid becoming disabled,” the Vazrazhdane MP said.
