Balgarianovinite.com Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said Serbia will never renounce Kosovo and Metohija during a ceremony in Vranje marking the 27th anniversary of the 1999 NATO air strikes against Yugoslavia, RTS reported. He described the intervention as “NATO aggression,” arguing it set a precedent for violations of international law and contributed to Serbia’s later territorial losses.
Vucic said the commemoration honours victims while serving as a warning for the future and claimed international pressure had urged him to recognize Kosovo’s independence, which he refused. Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Duric also criticized the NATO campaign as having been conducted without approval from the UN Security Council.
The NATO air campaign lasted from March to June 1999 and ended the conflict in Kosovo between Serbian forces under Slobodan Milosevic and Kosovo Albanian fighters. Estimates cited by Serbian media say about 2,500 civilians and 1,000 soldiers and police were killed in the NATO strikes. During the broader 1998–1999 Kosovo war, more than 10,000 civilians – over 8,000 of them Albanians – were killed, while crimes committed by Serbian forces were confirmed by rulings of the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague, as recalled by the Serbian service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
