A Washington Post photojournalist severely beaten by Israeli settlers in the West Bank underwent surgery for a gruesome injury she suffered in the assault — while European diplomats attending an olive harvest in the region Saturday were also reportedly attacked.
Heidi Levine’s finger was nearly detached as a result of the vicious attack she endured Friday, which was caught on video.
A finger on the photographer’s left hand was severed to the bone, leaving a tendon exposed, her daughter Ashley Milner told the Associated Press, according to The Times of Israel.
She also endured a broken rip and several broken vertebrae, according to the report.
Levine was set upon by Israeli settlers Friday as she covered the annual Palestinian olive harvest in Abu Falah, near Ramallah, in an attack so severe she reportedly sat on the ground afterward and said, “I’m going to die.”
The attack was caught on video.
“They took everything,” Levine said of her equipment afterward. “They took all my stuff.”
Those near her urged Levine to run, but she can be heard saying on footage of the incident that she couldn’t.
Asked if she was ok, Levine answered “No,” and repeated, “I’m going to die.”
A group of men eventually carried her to safety, according to reports.
The violence continued Saturday, as a group of diplomats from France, Belgium, and Poland also faced violence, this time in the village of Taybeh, according to an Army Radio report cited by The Times of Israel.
Masked settlers allegedly descended on the village in all terrain vehicles and surrounded the diplomats cars, demanding ID and smashing the window of at least one vehicle, according to the report.
The attackers threw stones and diplomats were seen laying on the ground, the outlet reported.
Israeli police later said they were probing the incident.
“Upon receiving the footage, police opened an investigation, and the Foreign Ministry was also notified to locate the victims, collect testimony, and identify the suspects so they can be brought to justice,” the police told The Times of Israel.
The police vowed to “pursue these investigations to ensure that all those involved in these incidents are brought to justice.”
