The European Commission (EC) welcomed the US-announced “energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine but said there were no signs that Russia was abiding by it, an EC spokesperson told a news conference here on Monday. “We would very much welcome such a ceasefire. Now we need to see whether it actually happens. It doesn’t seem to be the case, unfortunately,” said the spokesperson.
The spokesperson said the Commission had no further information beyond the US announcement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had expressed readiness to observe the ceasefire. “President Zelensky once again has reiterated that he is ready to engage in such a ceasefire. We need to see action also from Russia, which we’re not seeing because the strikes actually have continued over the weekend.”
The spokesperson said the EU “will continue to engage also with our partners and also with the US in bringing this war to a close”.
Asked whether the EU would lift restrictions on imports of Russian fossil fuels, the spokesperson said Europe was ending its dependence on such imports and did not want to help finance the war by purchasing Russian fossil fuels.
