Balgarianovinite.com The area affected by the fire, which has been burning for a second day between the Haskovo villages of Dinevo, Lyubenovo, Malevo, and Krivo Pole, reached nearly 1,000 hectares, Senior Commissioner Mitko Chakalov, Director of the Fire Safety and Civil Protection Regional Directorate – Haskovo, told BTA on Monday. Part of the fire is within the Koren firing ground, where no exercises are currently taking place. There is no risk to populated areas at present.
Chakalov reported that most of the fire’s perimeter has been contained. The main front line is between the villages of Dinevo and Malevo, with the northern part of the fire located in difficult-to-access terrain.
Fourteen fire brigade teams are taking part in the fire-fighting efforts on Monday, and this number may be increased. Military personnel, forestry officials and volunteers are also involved in the operation. Equipment for creating firebreaks is also expected to be deployed.
The Ministry of Defence reported that the fire initially broke out at an illegal landfill near the village of Dinevo. The flames then spread to dry grass, bushes and woodland.
Due to the complicated situation, a Cougar helicopter with a crew from the 24th Air Base in Krumovo was deployed on Sunday to assist with aerial firefighting. According to the regional administration, there is currently no need for aerial support.
The causes of the fire are still being investigated.
Less than two weeks ago, at a meeting at the Haskovo Regional Office of the State Forestry Enterprise attended by various institutions, Chakalov said that 15 people in the Haskovo region had already been sanctioned for causing fires.
