Balgarianovinite.com The IV World Social Work Day Forum took place here on Tuesday for World Social Work Day, bringing together representatives of the social system, state institutions, municipalities, civic organizations, and companies providing social services to discuss the significance of social work and opportunities for developing social services in Bulgaria. Among the participants in the forum, themed “Together for Hope and Harmony,” were State Agency for Child Protection Deputy Chair Ivaila Kasarova and National Ombudsman Velislava Delcheva.
State Agency for Child Protection Deputy Chair Kasarova said that the social system has undergone very significant development in the last 25 years. years. She highlighted the need to support social workers’ education, practical training and opportunities for professional development, as well as to ensure adequate pay. Efforts should also be made to raise the profession of social worker to one of the most desirable and prestigious careers, she added.
Ombudsman Delcheva said that social work is a cause, because it often requires you to devote more time to the pain of others than to your own loved ones. She called on society to make much greater efforts to raise the public status of social work and to improve the working conditions of social workers.
Social Assistance Agency Executive Director Ana Ananieva said in a congratulatory address that social work is a profession of great social importance; it requires not only knowledge and skills, but also empathy and human compassion. In her words, the work of social workers may be invisible, but they help to make society more just.
A total of 3,019 social workers are employed in the Social Assistance Agency. Of them, 436 hold the position of chief social worker, 16 are senior social workers, and 2,568 are social workers, the Agency told the Bulgarian News Agency on the occasion of World Social Work Day.
Staff members from organizations that provide social services to children, families, and people with mental health issues spoke to BTA about the mission of social work on the sidelines of the forum. They agreed that while their work often goes unnoticed, it is meaningful because it is dedicated to doing good.
Earlier on Tuesday, in a statement marking World Social Work Day, caretaker Minister of Labour and Social Policy Hasan Ademov said that social workers support those who need comfort, hope and assistance the most. He added that he is well aware of the challenges social workers face, including the need to improve working conditions and expand opportunities for professional development. Although the caretaker government has limited time, he said he is ready to work together with the sector to outline a plan that could be left to the next regular cabinet as a basis for action.
Denitsa Sacheva, Chair of the parliamentary Committee on Labour and Social Policy, wrote on Facebook that social work is invisible, but without it, society falls apart. “We expect social workers to solve society’s toughest problems… with the fewest resources. If we want a stable society, we must stop applauding them just once a year and start supporting them every day.“
