Balgarianovinite.com Bulgarian President Iliana Iotova met with Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Yerevan on Sunday, as part of her visit to participate in the Eighth Summit of the European Political Community on Monday.
During her meeting with President Khachaturyan, the two discussed strengthening bilateral cooperation between Bulgaria and Armenia. Iotova highlighted the importance of the European Political Community for enhancing connectivity and fostering relations across Europe. She noted that while the European Union’s Eastern Partnership initiative has lost momentum over the years, the EPC format provides it with renewed energy. In turn, Khachaturyan stressed that Bulgaria serves as a strong example of successful European integration and could support Armenia with its experience.
The talks underscored the traditionally friendly relations and deep historical ties between the Bulgarian and Armenian peoples. Both sides discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in key areas such as energy, economy, culture, tourism, high technologies, and artificial intelligence.
Also, Iotova met with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, and the two signed a Joint Declaration on Strategic Partnership between Bulgaria and Armenia. They highlighted the high level of political dialogue between the two countries and noted that there is still significant untapped potential for further development of bilateral relations. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the economy, energy, security, and defence.
Prime Minister Pashinyan expressed gratitude for the support provided by Bulgaria to the Armenian community, particularly in preserving its identity and cultural heritage. Iotova reaffirmed Bulgaria’s readiness, drawing on its 19 years of European Union membership, to assist Armenia on its path toward closer integration with the EU.
Regional and global security issues were also addressed, including the military conflicts in Ukraine and Iran and their wide-ranging consequences.
As part of her visit, President Iotova also visited the 131st Peyo Yavorov Primary School in Yerevan, named after the renowned Bulgarian poet. She was welcomed by students with performances of Bulgarian songs and folk dances. In her address, Iotova highlighted Yavorov’s literary legacy, including his poem “Armenians,” dedicated to the suffering of the Armenian people, and drew parallels between the historical struggles of the Bulgarian and Armenian nations.
She praised the teachers for their dedication in preserving Bulgarian language and culture, noting that students sing in Bulgarian with remarkable fluency and enthusiasm. Iotova also announced plans for the opening of a sixth Armenian school in Bulgaria, emphasizing the importance of preserving cultural identity among younger generations.
The president’s delegation includes Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) Director General Kiril Valchev. During the school visit, he was accompanied by ARMENPRESS Director Narine Nazaryan, reflecting the longstanding cooperation between the two news agencies, which dates back to 2004 and was renewed in 2022.
During the EPC Summit, President Iotova is expected to participate in a high-level discussion on the Vertical Gas Corridor, a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing energy security and diversifying natural gas supplies across Southeastern, Eastern, and Central Europe. She will also take part in an event titled “European Coalition Against Drugs.”
