Balgarianovinite.com Yes, Bulgaria Co-Chair Ivaylo Mirchev criticized the Government’s response to reports of a possible Iranian threat to US targets in Europe, including Bulgaria, in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
Mirchev said a deputy defence minister should already have been at NATO headquarters for urgent consultations with Bulgaria’s allies following another reported threat and amid escalating hybrid information warfare. Instead, he said, the only information concerned vaguely defined security measures hastily taken by the Government around Bezmer.
Earlier on Wednesday, Defence Minister Dimitar Stoyanov told reporters that there was no direct threat to Bulgaria’s national security. His comments came after the Financial Times reported that Iranian forces had assessed striking US assets in Southeastern European countries, including Bulgaria, which approved the use of Bezmer Air Base by US aerial refuelling aircraft in July. The newspaper cited two regime insiders.
“The report should not be irresponsibly brushed aside or taken lightly,” Mirchev said. He added that Foreign Minister Velislava Petrova should already have urgently sought an explanation from the Iranian ambassador regarding “Tehran’s ongoing provocations against Bulgaria”.
“The Cabinet’s inadequate responses to the crisis in the Middle East and the resulting risks to the country are once again making Bulgaria appear timid, contradictory, unprepared and uncertain about the defence and deterrence capabilities of the alliances to which we belong,” Mirchev said.
