Balgarianovinite.com Party affiliation should not matter in choosing a pro-Western president for Bulgaria, Yes, Bulgaria Co-Chair Ivaylo Mirchev said in Plovdiv on Monday.
Mirchev spoke to the media after meeting the party’s local organization. He said the candidate, rather than political parties, should be the focus of the forthcoming presidential election.
“Bulgarian citizens should look beyond party affiliation and make sure Bulgaria elects a president who looks to the West,” he said. Mirchev voiced confidence that such a candidate would contest the election. “Perhaps we will find out officially tomorrow. I believe there is one.”
Mirchev described the current moment as a major opportunity for Bulgaria and warned that the alternative would effectively give Prime Minister Rumen Radev a third term. “We have a pro-European candidate who can address the problems surrounding the country’s geopolitical orientation. Otherwise, we are heading not simply towards putting all our eggs in one basket, but towards giving Radev a third term,” he said.
Mirchev accused GERB leader Boyko Borissov of working for President Iliana Iotova’s campaign.
“Unfortunately, in recent days we have seen Borissov working for Iotova’s campaign. First, he put all his MPs at Radev’s disposal for the Supreme Judicial Council vote, and now he refuses to put forward a candidate. He has begun criticizing the pro-European candidate. As a result, he has clearly lost all motivation to take part in the election and is playing on Radev’s team, hoping for another political deal or something else,” Mirchev said.
He called this unacceptable.
“All parties should take a step back, and all pro-European Bulgarian citizens should support the pro-European candidate,” Mirchev said.
Continue the Change and Democratic Bulgaria have chosen former caretaker prime minister and former Bulgarian National Bank deputy governor Andrey Gurov as their presidential candidate for the October 25 election. Gurov said earlier Monday he will announce his presidential bid on Tuesday. Mirchev said last week that Gurov had broad support among their supporters and had performed well while leading the caretaker government.
GERB has yet to name a candidate. Borissov previously said the party would decide in September. On Saturday, he said Iotova would be nominated through an initiative committee and supported by Progressive Bulgaria, while arguing that the centre-right needed to unite behind one candidate.
