Zelenskyy in Belgrade: Patriot Missiles, EU Accession and Ukraine-Serbia Cooperation Top Agenda 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was on his first official visit to Belgrade since taking office, met his Serbian counterpart Aleksandar Vucic on Saturday in the Serbian capital. The main topics on the agenda of the visit were European integration, economic cooperation and energy cooperation.
At a joint press conference Zelenskyy said that Kyiv and Washington have agreed on monthly US deliveries of interceptor missiles for Patriot air defence systems to Ukraine. He noted, however, that the missiles being supplied will not be sufficient to protect Ukraine.
The Ukrainian leader said that at the beginning of the war with Russia he requested a license from the Biden administration to produce Patriot systems – and now, he and President Donald Trump have agreed that such a license will be provided.
Zelenskyy said that he understood Vucic’s scepticism about joining the EU, but stressed that Ukraine is at war and has a clear vision of what it wants to become in the future.
“It is not just about reality and enthusiasm when choosing the path towards the EU. I understand Aleksandar’s scepticism, which he shared with me in considerable detail yesterday. Ukraine has no time for scepticism. We are at war, and we realize and understand what Ukraine needs to be in the future,” Zelenskyy said.
“The President and I discussed bilateral cooperation and measures that could strengthen our infrastructure, railways and security. There are specific infrastructure development projects, including reconstruction projects in Ukraine, that we could implement together. This would make a significant contribution to preserving existing jobs and creating new ones both in Ukraine and Serbia,” he said.
He added that they had discussed the challenges facing Ukraine, as well as thermal power plants in the country that have come under attack. Zelenskyy said Ukraine was grateful that Serbia would provide a new package of humanitarian aid, particularly in the areas of healthcare and energy. He also said that talks on a free trade agreement between Ukraine and Serbia were making progress.
Serbian President Vucic said at the press conference that his country would always support Ukraine on its path towards European Union integration.
“Ukraine will always have the full support of our country on its European path, and I am grateful to the Ukrainian President for the support he has given Serbia. I made it clear that we support the United Nations Charter and Ukraine’s territorial integrity, just as we are deeply grateful to Ukraine for supporting the territorial integrity of the Republic of Serbia. We will continue to pursue this principled policy,” the Serbian President said.
“We discussed ways of improving our bilateral relations in all areas of social life, and I believe that through cooperation in agriculture, energy and all other fields, trade between our countries can increase significantly. We also discussed joint infrastructure projects and the involvement of Ukrainian companies in Serbia, and I believe we can achieve good and highly significant results in the future,” Vucic said.
“We did not discuss any military cooperation today. What will happen after the war is over is a different matter,” Vucic said. However, at the end of his remarks to the media, he did refer to the security sector. “We will open a drone factory here in September, but together with the Israelis. The Ukrainians are highly successful in this field and have many of their own drone factories,” the Serbian President added.
At a subsequent meeting with Serbian Prime Minister Djuro Macut, which had not been announced in advance, the sides discussed bilateral relations, the current situation in Ukraine and key European and international issues.
The Serbian government’s press service described the meeting as an open and substantive discussion. Macut stressed that Serbia remains firmly committed to peace and believes that lasting solutions can only be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy.
He noted that Serbia continuously provides humanitarian aid to the civilian population in Ukraine, thereby reaffirming its solidarity with people affected by the conflict and its determination to contribute, within its capabilities, to mitigating its consequences.
“As a country that understands the value of peace, Serbia will always support any serious effort that leads to an end to the conflict, reduces suffering and creates the conditions for a stable and secure future. Our policy is clear and principled – respect for international law, preserving peace and stability, and open dialogue with all partners,” Macut said.
In a Facebook post Zelenskyy thanked Serbia for expressing a willingness to take part in the reconstruction of a Ukrainian city affected by the war with Russia. The Ukrainian President was also grateful for Serbia’s decision to allocate EUR 2 million in support of his country’s energy sector.
According to the Facebook post, Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Macut discussed joint economic and logistical projects: the development of the Danube corridor and the strengthening of ties between Ukraine, the Western Balkans and the European Union.
