Bulgaria expresses solidarity with Romania following a fire aboard the tanker Yara J in the Black Sea, the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a post on X.
“Bulgaria expresses solidarity with Romania following the fire aboard the Yara J tanker in the Black Sea. The recurring incidents affecting commercial shipping in the region are a matter of deep concern. While the circumstances surrounding the fire are being clarified, close coordination between Bulgaria and Romania is essential to ensure the safe passage of trade ships in the Black Sea. This will be among our key priorities in the upcoming European Council discussions,” the statement reads.
A merchant vessel anchored in Romanian territorial waters in the Black Sea caught fire late on Wednesday, and its crew was evacuated, the Romanian Maritime Authority said, as quoted by Reuters. Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruta said that it was still unclear whether the Comoros-flagged vessel had been struck by a drone. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident is pending.
The Agerpres news agency reported on Thursday morning that another vessel, the Wide Trader, sailing under the flag of San Marino, had also caught fire. The ship is located approximately 13 nautical miles southeast of Sulina. Eight people are missing following the incident.
Digi24 television added that it remains unclear whether the vessel was hit by a drone. However, the broadcaster noted that fighter jets were scrambled overnight after a group of drones was detected in the area of Sulina and Ukraine’s Snake Island, which lies close to the Romanian coast.
