The issue of the reactors for Bulgaria’s abandoned Belene Nuclear Power Plant project was discussed during a meeting in Sofia with Kyrylo Budanov, chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Prime Minister Rumen Radev said during Q&A in Parliament on Wednesday.
Ukraine remains interested in purchasing the reactors, Radev said. He added that he had reiterated his proposal that, since Ukraine has the technology to install the reactors, the two countries could work together to install them at Belene, with support from the European Union and the United States.
The Prime Minister said the Ukrainian side was taking the proposal very seriously and that Budanov had indicated he would also discuss it with the US side.
Radev explained that the meeting had not been announced in advance for security considerations, at Budanov’s explicit request.
“The ongoing talks are being conducted discreetly,” the Bulgarian Prime Minister emphasized.
Radev also said he had raised with Budanov the issue of the drones that attacked ships in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea.
“Of course, I asked him whose drones he thought they were,” Radev said. He added that he did not expect a definitive answer from Budanov, just as he had not received one from Russian Ambassador to Bulgaria Eleonora Mitrofanova.
“We have two warring sides and both deny responsibility. It has always been this way,” Radev said.
