The 100th anniversary edition of the Varna Summer International Music Festival will close on Wednesday with a concert by the BBC Symphony Orchestra, which will perform in Bulgaria for the first time.
The concert, organised by Varna Municipality, will take place at the Palace of Culture and Sports, with the orchestra conducted by its principal conductor, Finnish maestro Sakari Oramo, and Swiss-Italian pianist Francesco Piemontesi as soloist.
The programme features Antonin Dvorak’s Piano Concerto and Edward Elgar’s Symphony No. 1, a major work of the British orchestral repertoire.
Founded in 1930, the BBC Symphony Orchestra is a central part of British musical life and the core ensemble of London’s BBC Proms festival. It is known for its performances of both classical repertoire and contemporary music.
Although this is the orchestra’s first visit to Bulgaria, it has links to the country’s musical scene. Bulgarian conductor Rosen Gergov has worked with the ensemble as a guest conductor, while Delyana Lazarova, who conducted the opening concert of this year’s anniversary edition of Varna Summer, made her BBC Proms debut in 2025 and is principal guest conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
