Balgarianovinite.com Kanatitza Association for Bulgarian Folk Dances from Strasbourg, France, will take part in the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival, which will take place in Munich from May 15 to 17.
The association’s original performance, At the Village Square in Ergentsi: Heart to Heart in the Horo Dance, takes audiences to the fictional village of Ergentsi, a place where generations, characters and destinies meet. Ergentsi symbolizes community and connectedness, a place where no one is left alone. As suggested by the German word sich ergänzen (“to complement one another”), the performance follows precisely this idea, the association’s President Ivelina Stoynova told BTA.
“Preserving and passing Bulgarian folklore on to future generations, while making it accessible and exciting for young people, is at the core of our work. That is why this year our greatest pride is the participation of our youngest dancers, who will be part of our original performance,” she said.
The choreography is original and was created especially for Kanatitza Strasbourg, she noted.
“It combines different styles and rachenitsa dances from several ethnographic regions of Bulgaria in order to recreate the richness of Bulgarian folklore through a stage narrative,” Stoynova said.
“Our preparation is intensive and inspiring. We are working not only on technique and synchronization, but also on stage presence and emotional expression in dance in order to create a complete stage narrative,” she said.
Special attention is being devoted to the youngest dancers, for whom the participation is both an important step and a major emotional experience, Stoynova added.
“The Kanatitza Strasbourg ensemble includes participants from various age groups, from our youngest dancers, aged six, to participants over 50. Our group brings together people with different experiences and often different cultural backgrounds, but we are all united by our love for Bulgarian folklore,” the Association President said.
Stoynova noted that the association was established in Strasbourg in 2024 and in its second year, around 35 adults, including French participants, are involved in the folk dance activities.
The travelling festival Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance is organized by and for amateur folklore ensembles performing outside Bulgaria. The initiative was launched by the Ot Izvora group in Lyon, France, which hosted both the first edition in 2015 and the tenth edition in 2025. More than 100 dance ensembles and over 4,000 guests are expected at the 11th edition in Munich in May. The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) is the official media partner of the event and will present all participants.
