Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria will deepen its economic and investment partnership with Japan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy, Investments and Industry Alexander Poulev said on Friday after meeting Japan’s Ambassador to Bulgaria Chikahisa Sumi.
Poulev described the relationship as strategically important and said the two countries shared a genuine spirit of friendship. The two reaffirmed their excellent bilateral ties and shared ambition to expand economic and investment cooperation, the press office of the Ministry of Economy, Investments and Industry said.
“We want to build on all the commitments made during that visit and assure you that the priorities set then have now been reaffirmed and are being implemented at government level,” Poulev said, referring to Prime Minister Rumen Radev’s 2025 visit to Japan, when he was president.
Poulev said the aim was to increase investment activity between Bulgaria and Japanese companies.
“Of course, relations between LB Bulgaricum and Japan’s Meiji remain a key part of our cooperation, but we need to be more ambitious. We will also develop our partnership in innovation, technology transfer, industrial production and high technology,” Poulev said.
Sumi said Japanese companies’ confidence in Bulgaria continued to grow. He added that an existing Japanese investment project in Bulgaria was expanded with a further investment of EUR 6 million, a clear sign of Japanese businesses’ long-term interest in the country.
Sumi said Bulgaria had highly skilled engineers and software developers, making it an attractive destination for Japanese technology investment. He added that Bulgaria could provide international companies with a base for expansion into European markets because of its human capital, technological expertise and strategic position in the region.
The two also discussed opportunities to expand cooperation on key transport and energy infrastructure projects.
Poulev presented the Bulgarian Government’s vision for establishing Bulgaria as a regional energy hub and expressed readiness to work actively with Japanese partners in energy, innovation, artificial intelligence, information technology and high-tech industry.
The two reaffirmed their intention to maintain an active political and economic dialogue and encourage new Japanese investment in Bulgaria through closer cooperation among institutions, businesses and industry.
Poulev outlined government reforms to improve the investment environment.
“We want to send investors a clear message: promoting investment is a key government priority. We have created a single point of contact through which we can maintain a professional and effective dialogue with strategic partners,” Poulev said. He also noted the establishment of the Central Coordination Unit for Strategic Investments. “We want businesses to create value instead of being held back by administrative procedures. We will provide all the administrative support needed through this unit, so investors do not waste time going from one institution or ministry to another. That will now be our responsibility,” Poulev added.
Bulgaria and Japan signed a declaration on strategic cooperation during Radev’s visit to Japan in May 2025.
The declaration, signed in Tokyo on May 20, 2025, raised bilateral relations to a strategic partnership. It set out closer cooperation in information and digital technologies, industry, science, energy, culture, education and tourism.
Bilateral trade reached USD 216.5 million in the first nine months of 2025, up nearly 10% from a year earlier. Business ties included more than 50 years of cooperation between LB Bulgaricum and Meiji, while Kyowa Europe opened a new production facility in Sofia’s Iskar Industrial Zone in July 2026 to expand output for the European market.
