Balgarianovinite.com Democratic Bulgaria Co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev said in a Facebook post marking the 141st anniversary of Bulgaria’s Unification: “The great lesson of September 6 is that the national interest cannot be defended by keeping one’s head down.”
“The Unification was the moment when Bulgaria did not wait for permission. On September 6, 1885, Bulgarians themselves made a decision about their country and took the risk of defending it. Russia did not support the Unification. In response, it recalled the Minister of War and Russian officers from the Bulgarian army. Our young army was left without a large part of its senior command at one of the most critical moments. But Bulgaria did not back down. Two months later, Bulgarian soldiers and officers defended their country in the Serbo-Bulgarian War and proved that freedom is not a gift if you have the will to defend it. The victory strengthened the Unification and Bulgaria’s standing in Europe. This is the great lesson of September 6: the national interest cannot be defended by keeping one’s head down,” Mirchev said.
“Today, Bulgaria is part of the EU and NATO. We have allies, a voice and a place at the table where decisions about Europe’s future are made. Our interest lies in a strong Europe, genuine partnerships and a self-confident Bulgaria that does not wait for permission to stand up for its future. The Unification succeeded because Bulgarians decided what they wanted for Bulgaria and had the courage to defend it,” Mirchev said.
