Fuel from the US company Westinghouse will not be used in the upcoming fuel cycle for Unit 6 of the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), because the licensing process is currently underway, and the license will not be ready by the time the unit is shut down for refueling in October, Bulgarian Nuclear Regulatory Agency (BNRA) deputy head Elizabeth Tsvetanova told reporters Thursday. Currently, Unit 6 operates with Russian nuclear fuel.
Tsvetanova explained that in April, the BNRA received an application for licensing six nuclear fuel assemblies manufactured in Sweden, and the initial documents have already been reviewed. “We have requested additional information regarding the monitoring programme for the fuel assemblies during the period in which they will be in operation. We have received such a programme and are in the process of reviewing the documents. We will likely engage a consultant for part of these analyses,” Tsvetanova explained.
Unit 5 of the plant already has fuel assemblies loaded from the US company, and the transition to a complete replacement with Westinghouse fuel is expected to be completed in the spring of 2027.
Tsvetanova participated in a seminar for journalists on “Ensuring Nuclear Safety at Extremely Low Water Levels in the Danube.”
