The medieval Baba Vida Fortress in Vidin is one of Stefan Valdobrev’s favorite locations in his The Acoustics of Bulgaria project, Valdobrev told BTA on Thursday. Here, the musician and his band, The Usual Suspects, recorded “Slabi Karti” (“Weak Cards”), which Valdobrev described as one of the hardest tracks on their upcoming album.
“I really wanted the places I chose to be genuine, just like my lyrics and my songs,” Valdobrev stated, noting that the project’s locations were chosen for their authenticity as well as their connection to Valdobrev’s artistic journey.
At Baba Vida, drums were recorded in the fortress courtyard, while guitars and bass were recorded in one of its passageways, with tourists watching the musicians recording as they explored the fortress. Valdobrev emphasized that Baba Vida is particularly well-suited for the recording because it has preserved its authentic character. “When you arrive and touch the stone, the walls, and everything else, you know it is exactly as it has been for centuries,” he pointed out.
The song will feature prominent backing vocals, with The Usual Suspects creating a powerful choral sound alongside heavy drums and guitars. According to Valdobrev, the song is shaping up to be one of the most distinctive tracks on the album. The musicians have also recorded at several locations around Belogradchik, including its summer theatre, fortress, the Belogradchik Rocks and Magura Cave.
The Acoustics of Bulgaria is a project by Stefan Valdobrev and The Usual Suspects, who are recording their album at historical, spiritual and archaeological sites across Bulgaria. The project was launched in April 2025 with support from the Ministry of Culture and media partners BTA and BG Radio.
