Presidential candidate Iliana Iotova and vice-presidential candidate Kiril Valchev launched their election campaign at the Golden Church in the Great Preslav historical and archaeological Reserve on Sunday.
Iotova said they had not hesitated for a moment about where to begin their campaign, stressing that Pliska and Great Preslav represented the beginning of the Bulgarian state and statehood and the starting point from which everything had developed. She said that Cyrillic writing had been used there and that the Christian faith had been adopted there, while language, writing and faith had subsequently spread throughout the Slavic world.
Iotova stressed that they wanted to carry the glory of Bulgaria’s past into the future and pass it on generously to the next generations so that children would know where Bulgaria had begun, understand their roots, have confidence in their identity, and preserve their language and heritage.
She said Bulgaria currently needed an understanding of statehood in which laws applied equally to everyone, there was no “telephone justice”, and the state belonged to Bulgarians and its citizens rather than to a handful of politicians.
Valchev said they had gathered at the Golden Church in Great Preslav together with Iotova to begin a conversation about Bulgaria’s future over the following month during the election campaign, but, more importantly, after the campaign had ended.
Former president Georgi Parvanov, who served from 2002 to 2012, Shumen Regional Governor Georgi Zhekov, MPs, citizens, mayors and municipal councillors from the region attended the campaign launch.
