Trips by Bulgarian residents abroad totalled 1,116,200 in August 2026, up 3.5% from August 2025. Increases were recorded across all purposes of travel, according to preliminary data released by the National Statistical Institute (NSI) on Tuesday.
In August 2026, visits by foreign nationals to Bulgaria totalled 2,221,200, down 2.1% compared with the same month of the previous year. Business trips decreased by 5.5%, while trips for holiday and recreation purposes fell by 3.9%. Visits for other purposes increased by 0.5%. Transit crossings through the country accounted for 37.8% (840,600) of all visits by foreign nationals to Bulgaria.
NSI data show that in August 2025, trips by Bulgarians abroad totalled 1,078,900, up 19.4% from August 2024, while visits by foreign nationals totalled 2,269,900, an increase of 6.3% compared with the same month of the previous year.
The largest number of trips by Bulgarians in August 2026 were to Greece (321,600), Turkiye (288,500), Romania (78,900), Serbia (72,400), Germany (67,300), Italy (39,700), France (29,800), Austria (29,500), the Republic of North Macedonia (27,900), and Spain (24,200).
The largest number of visits to Bulgaria were made by nationals of Romania (419,200), Turkiye (346,500), Germany (212,400), Ukraine (174,600), Poland (111,600), Serbia (99,900), Greece (81,600), Czechia (73,400), the Netherlands (72,600), and France (67,900).
