Bulgarian Patriarch and Sofia Metropolitan Daniil visited the Church of St George the Victorious in Fuheis, Jordan, during his visit to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Bulgarian Patriarchate said on Tuesday. Daniil also met with King Abdullah II of Jordan. The meeting was attended by Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem, Nevrokop Metropolitan Seraphim, Archbishop Christophoros of Kyriakopolis, Archimandrite Theophilos, and the King’s Chief Adviser for Religious and Cultural Affairs, Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad.
Patriarch Daniil was welcomed by the clergy and Orthodox Christians of the local parish, accompanied by Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem and Archbishop Christophoros of Kyriakopoulos.
The Church of St George the Victorious is among the most significant Orthodox churches in the city. Consecrated in the late 19th century, it is one of the oldest functioning Orthodox churches in this part of Jordan. Today, it also operates as a monastic complex with active social programmes, Sunday schools and cultural events, the Bulgarian Patriarchate also said.
During his meeting with Patriarch Daniil, King Abdullah II reaffirmed that Jordan would continue to protect the Christian presence in the region and uphold its role in protecting Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. Abdullah II invited Patriarch Daniil to take part in commemorations in Jordan in 2030 marking 2,000 years since the baptism of Jesus Christ. The celebrations will be held at the site of the baptism of Jesus, Bethany Beyond the Jordan. According to the King, the event will provide an opportunity to highlight the historical and religious significance of the baptism site, the Bulgarian Patriarchate added.
The Bulgarian Patriarchate also said that during his visit, Patriarch Daniel is due to visit the Metropolitanate of the Archdiocese of Kyriakopolis, where he will meet with Archbishop Christophoros and clergy from the archdiocese.
Earlier on Tuesday, Patriarch Daniil was welcomed with special ceremony in the Jordanian city of Madaba, known as “Medeba” in the Old Testament. The church of St George in Madaba preserves a mosaic map created in the second half of the sixth century, around 565, as part of the floor decoration of a Byzantine church in ancient Medeba (Madaba).
The church’s mosaic is the oldest surviving geographical map of the Holy Land, with Jerusalem depicted at its centre. It depicts dozens of cities, settlements, rivers and holy sites in Palestine, the lands east of the Jordan, Egypt and southern Syria, identified by Greek inscriptions. Of particular value is the detailed plan of Jerusalem from the Byzantine period, showing the city walls, streets and important Christian churches.
Daniil’s visit to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem will continue until September 30. According to his official programme, he is also due to visit other holy sites associated with the Christian faith.
Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia Daniil arrived in Israel on September 25 for his first irenic visit to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem. The visit is at the invitation of Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem and following a decision by the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church – Bulgarian Patriarchate. The delegation includes Metropolitan John of Varna and Veliki Preslav, Metropolitan Seraphim of Nevrokop, Bishop Gerasim of Melnik, Secretary General of the Holy Synod, Protodeacon Dr Deyan Korunoski, Dr Aleksandar Smochevski, patriarchal adviser and interpreter, among others.
On Saturday, Patriarch Theophilos III of Jerusalem presented Patriarch Daniil with the Order of the Cross of the Holy Sepulchre, the highest distinction of the ancient Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
