Twice as many Bulgarian students are starting higher education in Spain in 2026, and the total number of those leaving to study abroad is up 9%, according to data from an analysis by Integral Bulgaria, published on Tuesday. The Netherlands remains the most preferred destination for the third consecutive year with a share of 32%, 5% more than the previous period. Spain is in second place with 16%, followed by Austria and Italy with 10% each, and Germany with 9%.
Spain is among the most dynamic destinations for higher education abroad. Over 95% of applicants for Spanish-language programs go to public universities, while for English-language programs the ratio between public and private universities is 70:30. In addition to Madrid and Barcelona, interest is also increasing in Valencia, Seville, Murcia, Alicante and Malaga.
Ireland also reports more applications, with the strongest interest in music, 3D animation, visual effects, cinema and directing. As EU citizens, Bulgarian students can apply for funding at Irish educational institutions, tied to family income, which can cover the annual fee of EUR 2,500 to 5,000.
Belgium attracts with affordable prices and practical training. For the academic year 2026/2027, the share of Bulgarian students in the country increased by 21%. The annual fee is EUR 1,181, and among the most sought-after specialties are business, computer science, art and design.
Austria remains in the top 5 due to early admissions to universities of applied sciences, both with German and English language programs.
Germany maintains its strong positions in engineering, medicine, economics, architecture, and law with education in German.
The focus of Bulgarian prospective students remains primarily on Europe, with attractive higher education opportunities including free tuition in Finland, Sweden and Denmark, as well as lower fees in France and Belgium. Monaco, Malta and Hungary are also on the map as possible destinations that attract the interest of Bulgarian students.
Business, economics, computer science, technology, engineering and design remain the top choices, but interest in law and psychology has increased. According to education experts, these are fields where the human factor remains decisive and which will be less affected by artificial intelligence.
