Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil visited Orthodox churches and Bulgaria’s embassy in Amman, Jordan, at the close of his irenic visit to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Bulgarian Patriarchate said on Wednesday.
Daniil and Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III were welcomed at the Presentation of the Virgin Mary Orthodox Church in Amman’s Sweifieh borough, where a short prayer service was held. The two church leaders visited the St Ignatius the God-Bearer Theological Centre to learn about its work and initiatives. The delegation went in procession to the Church of St Nektarios of Aegina, where it venerated relics of the saint.
The formal reception continued at the archdiocesan headquarters, where King Abdullah II’s Chief Adviser for Religious and Cultural Affairs Prince Ghazi bin Muhammad and Deputy Prime Minister Muhannad Shehadeh joined the gathering.
Patriarchal Vicar in Amman Archbishop Christophoros of Kyriakoupolis welcomed Daniil and Theophilos and reflected on the Church’s mission in contemporary society. He outlined the archdiocese’s activities and initiatives, saying Christians in Jordan enjoyed freedom and could practise their faith peacefully. He focused particularly on preparations getting under way in Jordan for the 2,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Christ in 2030.
Daniil said he was delighted to be among the brethren of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, praising the hospitality and love shown throughout his irenic visit. He prayed that God would grant Theophilos and Christophoros strength, health and grace to continue serving the Church and society. He said the prince put love into practice by supporting the Church and promoting pilgrimage and cultural tourism in Jordan.
At the end of the reception, Theophilos thanked Daniil for making his first irenic visit to the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, describing it as historic for both the Bulgarian Patriarchate and the ancient Church of Jerusalem. He conveyed greetings to the clergy and faithful of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church and expressed hope for more frequent meetings and joint liturgical services between the two local Orthodox Churches.
Daniil also visited the Bulgarian Embassy in Amman, where he met Ambassador Metin Kazak and diplomatic staff. Kazak described the embassy’s events and its work to promote Bulgarian language and culture. Daniil conducted a water-blessing service and prayed for God’s guidance and support for Bulgaria’s diplomatic mission in Jordan in all its work. After the service, he presented a copy of the miracle-working icon of St George from Hadzhidimovo Monastery.
