The Interior Ministry’s official registers contain no information about reports, complaints or alerts submitted by Plovdiv-based businessman Ilian Filipov raising concerns for his safety. Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev has ordered a full check of reports held by ministry structures, the ministry said.
Filipov, President of Botev Plovdiv football club and co-owner of PIMK, the largest transport and logistics company in Bulgaria, was found dead with a gunshot wound in the early hours of Wednesday.
Following publicly circulated reports from March 2025 that the businessman was concerned for his life, Demerdzhiev also ordered a check to determine if a competent Interior Ministry unit had launched an investigation on its own initiative following the reports. There is no information that such action was taken in 2025, the ministry said.
In this connection, Demerdzhiev instructed Interior Ministry Secretary General Lyubomir Nikolov to conduct a full analysis of whether important circumstances and information had been overlooked by law enforcement authorities in 2025.
District Prosecutor Vanya Hristova told a briefing earlier on Wednesday that the Plovdiv District Prosecution Office was supervising pre-trial proceedings into the premeditated murder of a Plovdiv businessman identified as I.F. Later, PFC Botev Plovdiv announced that its president, Ilian Filipov, had died.
