Parliament will hear Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev on Thursday about the murder of the Botev Plovdiv football club President and co-owner of the largest transport and logistics company in Bulgaria PIMK, Ilian Filipov, MPs decided unanimously with 203 votes in favour. The hearing is the first item on Thursday’s plenary agenda.
Businessman Ilian Filipov was killed in Plovdiv on Wednesday. Senior Commissioner Vasil Kostadinov, said the murder took place at around 1 a.m. at a property owned by the businessman. Demerdzhiev said that the Ministry’s official registers contain no information about reports, complaints or alerts submitted by Filipov raising concerns for his safety.
A previously scheduled hearing of the Interior Minister on public procurement contracts for guardrails and the alleged channelling of funds to finance flights by Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan Peevski was dropped from the agenda. The motion to remove the item was approved by 131 votes to 62, with 10 abstentions, including in a revote.
On September 18, the Interior Minister told a briefing that companies involved in the supply of guardrails diverted funds to a shell company, which in turn paid for private flights taken by Peevski. In early July, Demerdzhiev said that the MRF leader had taken 227 flights from Sofia Airport between 2018 and 2026, 181 of them on private jets at a cost of EUR 1.8 million.
National Assembly Chair Mihaela Dotsova proposed the changes to the agenda at the start of the plenary sitting. The request for the new hearing on the Plovdiv killing was submitted by Progressive Bulgaria.
