Starting October 1, Wizz Air has launched direct flights from Sofia to Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, the airline said Friday. Until October 22, the flights will operate twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, while in the following months they will operate three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
With the launch of the Sofia – Sharm El-Sheikh route, Wizz Air has become the only low-cost airline in Bulgaria to connect the country with Egypt through a regular direct service. To meet growing demand for winter sun holidays, the airline will also launch a second regular direct route from Bulgaria to Egypt, from Sofia to Hurghada, starting October 27, according to the statement.
The low-cost airline has been operating in Bulgaria for more than two decades and has carried more than 34 million passengers to and from the country during that period. With a fleet of 11 Airbus A321neo aircraft – eight based in Sofia and three in Varna – the airline is strengthening its position as the market-share leader with 33% among carriers in Bulgaria.
In September, the airline carried more than 7.7 million passengers, representing a 24.5% increase year-on-year, and achieved a flight completion rate of 99.65%.
The airline also announced in September that it would launch direct flights between Sofia and Berlin starting September 20. The route operates year-round, with four flights a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
