The Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) approved a natural gas price of EUR 44.09/MWh for October, excluding access and transmission charges, excise duty and VAT, the regulator said in a press release on Thursday.
At this price, Bulgargaz will sell natural gas to end suppliers and companies licensed for the production and transmission of heat. The approved price is 5.99% higher than in September.
EWRC did not approve Bulgargaz’s updated proposal, submitted on Thursday, for a price of EUR 44.41/MWh, rejecting an additional increase of EUR 0.33/MWh.
“The energy regulator will not allow an additional increase in the natural gas price for October, as this is unacceptable,” EWRC Chair Plamen Mladenovski said. He noted that market trends for natural gas prices during the winter period are unfavourable and argued that the October price should therefore be kept as low as possible and should not exceed the level initially requested.
Mladenovski said natural gas accounts for more than 70% of the final price of household heating and that any sharp change in gas prices has a direct impact on consumers.
The October supply mix includes natural gas under Bulgaria’s long-term contract with Azerbaijan, as well as liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplied under contracts with traders following a tender procedure. A minimum amount of gas is also planned to be withdrawn from the Chiren underground gas storage facility.
The approved October price includes the natural gas price component at the entry points to the gas transmission networks, the public supply component under the relevant natural gas pricing regulations, and a component covering Bulgargaz’s costs for storing gas at Chiren in fulfilment of obligations under the Emergency Action Plan.
EWRC’s decision approving the natural gas price for October 2026 will be published on the regulator’s website.
