Around 750 Interior Ministry officers will provide security and maintain public order during the state ceremony for the reception and interment of the remains of Tsar Samuel in Sofia on Saturday, October 3, Sofia Police Chief Inspector Ivan Georgiev told journalists on Thursday.
Around 550 Sofia Police officers will be deployed, along with some 200 personnel from the Gendarmerie, the specialized police forces and the Special Operations and Counter-Terrorism Directorate.
Security arrangements will begin early on Saturday, with parking and traffic restrictions introduced in central Sofia. Traffic along parts of Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard will begin to be restricted at around 10 a.m.
Two security zones will be established for the ceremony. Access to the area where the official ceremony will take place will be controlled by police, while members of the public entering the second zone may be subject to security checks. Items that could pose a danger to those attending will not be permitted.
At around noon, depending on the arrival of the military aircraft carrying Tsar Samuel’s remains, traffic will be temporarily restricted along the route from Vasil Levski Sofia Airport to the city centre. Georgiev said the restrictions would remain in place only for as long as necessary and that most traffic was expected to be restored by around 1:30 p.m.
Following the ceremony, a procession carrying the remains will proceed through central Sofia to the Church of St Sofia, where they will be interred. Members of the public will be able to follow the procession from the pavements but will not be permitted to walk with it on the roadway.
Prime Minister Rumen Radev announced on Tuesday that Bulgaria and Greece had reached an agreement on the return of Tsar Samuel’s remains. They are to be formally handed over to Bulgaria in Thessaloniki on October 3 and flown to Sofia aboard a Spartan military transport aircraft.
The remains will be placed in a specially made sarcophagus in the Church of St Sofia. Radev invited members of the public to attend their arrival at Knyaz Alexander I Square at 12:30 p.m.
