If the October 25 presidential elections were held today, the presidential ticket of Iliana Iotova and Kiril Valchev would receive 50.2% of the votes of those who have already decided who they would vote for, according to a nationally representative survey by the Sova Harris polling agency presented Friday. The ticket of Andrey Gurov and Georgi Kandev would come second with 23.7%, followed by the ticket of Kostadin Kostadinov and Petar Volgin with 12.7%
Of the respondents who have decided to vote and for whom, 13.4% would support another presidential ticket.
The poll was conducted between September 23 and 28 among 1,000 adult Bulgarians using the standardized face-to-face interview method at the respondent’s home. The maximum margin of error, assuming a 50% relative share and a 95% confidence level, is 3.1%. The survey was commissioned by the Trud daily.
Less than 50% of respondents have decided to vote and have chosen whom to vote for, the data show. Based on this, slightly fewer than 2.5 million voters are expected to go to the polling stations in the first round of the presidential election. Sova Harris clarifies that the estimates are based on people actually residing in the country, excluding Bulgarian citizens living abroad who are included in the voter rolls.
According to the pollsters, there would be a second round, in which Iotova-Valchev and Gurov-Kandev would compete.
In terms of trust, among the politicians mentioned in the survey, Iotova ranks first with 45.7%, followed by Prime Minister Rumen Radev with 44.6%. Gurov received 19.4%, Kostadinov 17.2%, and Bulgarian Socialist Party leader Krum Zarkov 15.2%.
Continue the Change leader Assen Vassilev is trusted by 14.7%, Democrats for Strong Bulgaria leader Radan Kanev by 12.8%, Yes, Bulgaria co-leaders Bozhidar Bozhanov and Ivaylo Mirchev by 12.6% and 12.5%, respectively, and MECh leader Radostin Vasilev by 11.1%. GERB leader Boyko Borissov received 10%, Velichiev leader Ivelin Mihaylov 8%, and Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan Peevski 2.7%.
The Bulgarian Orthodox Church is the institution with the highest level of trust, 58%. It is followed by the police at 47.5%, the Army at 46.9%, and the Presidency at 46.8%. Trust in the Government stands at 35.1%, in the National Assembly at 20.2%, in the courts at 18.8%, and in the prosecution service at 16.2%.
High prices and inflation are cited as the country’s most serious problem by 53.7% of respondents. Poor governance was cited by 13.6%, corruption and judicial reform by 12.5%, unemployment and low incomes by 10.1%, and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East by 7.7%.
According to the survey, 44.6% believe that the Rumen Radev Government is handling the country’s governance rather unsuccessfully, 34.8% rate it as rather successful, and 20.6% are unable to assess it.
A total of 58.4% of those surveyed agree with Prime Minister Radev’s assertion that the war in Ukraine cannot have a successful military resolution and that European Union leaders must establish diplomatic contacts to engage in dialogue with Russia. Eighteen percent disagree, while 23.6% are undecided.
A share of 46.5% believe that Ukraine should make peace with Russia by agreeing to territorial concessions. 26.1% hold the opposite view, while 27.4% are undecided.
Regarding the European Commission President’s statement that Russia’s energy resources are toxic for Europe and that European countries should phase them out in the long term, 65.8% disagree, 12% agree, and 22.2% are undecided.
According to Sova Harris’s summary, the attitudes observed in the last parliamentary election persist in the current situation. The agency notes that the active core groups of supporters for the three presidential ticket pairs with the highest support vary in size, and there is no significant support from the periphery for any of the candidates.
