The image of the majestic Tsar Samuel is one of the deepest historical archetypes for Bulgarians, Bulgarian Prime Minister Roumen Radev said Saturday at the official ceremony for the handover of the remains of the medieval Bulgarian ruler at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki. The ceremony is being broadcast live by the Bulgarian National Television. He said it was “a tremendous honour” for him to be back at the Museum of Byzantine Culture in Thessaloniki to receive the remains on behalf of the Bulgarian state.
Roumen Radev underscored the role of Greek archaeology professor Nikolaos Moutsopoulos, who uncovered Tsar Samuel’s remains in 1969.
“The image of the majestic and tragic Tsar Samuel, who was unable to bear the sight of his suffering soldiers, is one of the deepest historical archetype for every Bulgarian. And if in the past Tsar Samuel divided us, I can say that today he unites us. Today he makes our strategic partnership even stronger and the ties between our two peoples even closer,” Roumen Radev said.
The Prime Minister recalled that Bulgaria’s efforts to have Tsar Samuel’s remains returned date back to the 1970s, when Prof. Moutsopoulos discovered them during excavations of the basilica on the island of Agios Achillios, which was built by the Bulgarian tsar in the late 10th century.
“For six decades, the Bulgarian state has continued its efforts to have these remains returned to Bulgaria, and I am pleased that today we are fulfilling Professor Moutsopoulos’s moral testament that they be returned to the Bulgarians, for which I am grateful,” the Bulgarian Prime Minister said.
Roumen Radev expressed his “deepest gratitude” to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis “for his political leadership, wisdom and courage” in achieving “this historic agreement for our two countries”.
The Prime Minister also thanked the culture ministers of the two countries, Lina Mendoni and Evtim Miloshev, as well as the diplomatic teams of both countries for preparing the agreement, which provides for the reciprocal exchange of historical relics and cultural artefacts for safekeeping.
“Things that belong to our two peoples, that are our memory and our connection, and our compatriots and future generations deserve and must be able to pay tribute to their ancestors,” Roumen Radev said.
He noted that over these decades, politicians, diplomats, scholars and statesmen had worked hard to bring about this day.
