A day after the drone attack on two merchant ships in Bulgaria’s exclusive economic zone, presidential candidate Andrey Gurov urged the President, the Prime Minister, and the Government to announce what specific measures have been taken to ensure the safety of Bulgarian citizens and the country’s defence. He posed four specific questions to the Executive and the President, as quoted by the Gurov-Kandev Nomination Committee on Wednesday: what measures have been taken following the attack; when will Bulgaria join the European Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition; when will the country’s participation in NATO’s anti-drone initiative be reviewed; and when will the rearmament of the Bulgarian Army be accelerated.
According to Gurov, the country needs modern radars and an integrated air defence system, capabilities to detect and counter drones, secure communications and command systems, sufficient ammunition and logistics, high-precision and long-range capabilities, and well-trained personnel.
“I will insist that these capabilities be integrated with NATO and strengthen Bulgaria’s role on the Eastern Flank and in the Black Sea region,” Gurov said.
Gurov also said that, as president and commander-in-chief of the Bulgarian Army, he would not “run” the army in place of the Executive but would work toward a strong, modern, and well-prepared Bulgarian Army, towards fulfilling the commitments made, and towards the country’s active role in the collective security of the alliances to which it belongs. “I will keep the public informed about every step that needs to be taken – including investments in our own production capabilities and technological capacity,” Gurov added.
