All ministries should work together to find ways to support people who lack access to employment, Economic and Social Council (ESC) Chair Zornitsa Rusinova said on Wednesday. She was speaking at the conference “20 Years Later: From Rights on Paper to Independent Living,” organized by the Maria’s World Foundation.
Rusinova said the process should involve not only the Labour and Social Policy Ministry, but also the ministries of Health and of Education, so that people in need can obtain the necessary qualifications and find work.
She added that employers should also be encouraged to hire people in need and provide them with opportunities for professional development.
Rusinova said the Labour and Social Policy Ministry had initiated numerous legislative changes over the years. Alongside major investment in social services, significant progress had also been made through amendments to the Persons with Disabilities Act, she said.
The ESC works on issues affecting people with disabilities in a number of areas, including employment, healthcare problems and the provision of different services, Rusinova noted.
She said that a conference held earlier in October had discussed ways to improve legislation on social support. Rusinova said payments in some cases had increased 60- to 80-fold over the years, but added that much more still needed to be done to bring meaningful improvements to the lives of people with disabilities.
