The Ministry of Innovation and Digital Transformation and the Bulgarian Space Cluster (BSC) have signed a memorandum of cooperation aimed at developing Bulgaria’s space industry and increasing its participation in European programmes and international initiatives, the Ministry said on its official website.
The document formalizes long-term institutional cooperation between the Ministry and the association. It will cover both companies already operating in the space sector and technology organizations capable of developing products, services and expertise with applications in space.
The Ministry and the BSC will work to strengthen the capacity of Bulgarian companies and organizations to participate in European and international programmes. Data and analyses provided by the BSC on Bulgaria’s space sector will be used in policy development.
The sides will work together to develop space-related activities and cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA), the EU Agency for the Space Programme and other international partners. They will also organize events, information days and initiatives for the sector.
“Space is a strategic sector with enormous potential for innovation, high-tech manufacturing and the creation of high-value-added products. At the Ministry of Innovation and Digital Transformation, we are working consistently and actively to create better conditions for Bulgarian companies and research organizations in the space sector,” Deputy Minister of Innovation and Digital Transformation Mira Yosifova was quoted as saying.
According to Yosifova, the memorandum is a step towards closer partnership between the State and industry and towards building a competitive Bulgarian space ecosystem.
“Bulgaria has an excellent base of companies covering most parts of the space value chain. Now is the time to better connect these capabilities and expertise and make them more visible to the European space ecosystem,” BSC co-chair Lyubomir Baburov said.
He welcomed the Ministry’s commitment to making Bulgaria a recognizable participant in the European space sector and said that the cluster would work towards this goal through industry.
The Bulgarian Space Cluster brings together companies from Bulgaria’s space industry and experts in space and related technologies.
Taking part in the 33rd meeting of the Committee on the Plan for European Cooperating States of the European Space Agency in Paris in September, Yosifova said that a National Space Strategy was expected to be drafted by the end of 2026.
A national programme for strategic innovation sectors, covering areas such as space technologies, microelectronics and dual-use technologies, is planned to be established in 2027. One of the Ministry’s objectives is also to elevate Bulgaria’s partnership with ESA to the level of associate membership.
