Disappointment with the country’s leadership, a growing sense of injustice, and issues relating to income and access to healthcare were among the main topics discussed at a meeting of presidential and vice-presidential candidates Ivan Hristanov and Stoyanka Cherkezova with supporters in Silistra on Thursday.
Hristanov criticized the refusal of the other presidential pairs to take part in a debate. In his view, citizens have the right to see how the runners in the race react in a more provocative setting and defend their positions with arguments. He expressed concern that only three pairs, backed by parliamentary political parties, have been invited to the upcoming debate on Bulgarian National Television. In his view, this is a discriminatory approach which creates more favourable conditions for the invited participants.
The presidential candidate stated that people expect a genuine fight against the oligarchy, but the sense of injustice is deepening. As an example, he cited subsidies for photovoltaic power stations, which he believes will exceed EUR 2 billion over the next two to three years, against a backdrop of insufficient funding for programmes to support the birth rate.
Cherkezova noted that among the people they meet, there are those disappointed with [Rumen] Radev’s administration, including Progressive Bulgaria voters. According to her, the main problems relate to incomes, access to quality education and care for the elderly. She emphasized that all these factors influence the country’s demographic development.
