A total of 923 patients were awaiting organ transplants in Bulgaria as of October 6, 2026, including 848 waiting for a kidney transplant, Radostina Getova of the Medical Supervision Executive Agency said on Saturday at the 11th Pulmonary Hypertension Conference in Sofia.
Getova, an expert with the Agency’s Directorate for Management, Coordination and Control of Transplantation and Assisted Reproduction, said that 13 deceased donors had been reported in 2026, with 17 kidney, two heart and seven liver transplants performed.
The conference was organized by the Pulmonary Hypertension Association and opened by its Chair Todor Mangarov. Discussions focused on transplantation activity in Bulgaria and developments in the treatment of pulmonary hypertension. Medical students from Sofia and Varna also attended.
Assoc. Prof. Vasil Velchev, a specialist in the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary hypertension at St Anna University Hospital in Sofia, said pulmonary arterial hypertension is a rare disease that affects women more frequently, with patients averaging around 50 years of age.
Fatigue is among the earliest symptoms, while diagnosis can involve X-rays, echocardiography and electrocardiography, he said.
Velchev said a new medicine administered by subcutaneous injection was expected to become reimbursable next month, adding that it would broaden the existing treatment options. Lung transplantation, however, remained difficult to access in Bulgaria, he said.
Dr Sarkis Kalustian, also a pulmonary hypertension specialist at St Anna University Hospital, spoke about treatment approaches for patients with thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.
Pulmonologist and MP Alexander Simidchiev discussed Bulgaria’s legal framework and practices in other countries. He said it was important for Bulgaria to join Eurotransplant, the international organization coordinating the exchange and allocation of donor organs among participating European countries. According to Simidchiev, this would require Bulgaria to perform 100 transplants annually.
Getova also reviewed the history of transplantation in Bulgaria, which began in 1968. She said that a total of 50 patients received assistance for transplantation abroad in 2025 and 2026.
