The EUR 170 million in state aid approved by the European Commission for Bulgarian farmers affected by higher fuel and fertilizer prices due to the Middle East crisis will be divided into two schemes, Agriculture and Food Minister Plamen Abrovski said on Saturday. He spoke to BTA during the 11th National Walnut Festival in the village of Golyamo Dryanovo near Kazanlak.
Abrovski said around EUR 100 million would first be distributed to farmers seeking compensation for higher fuel costs. A second scheme will provide support to producers affected by increased fertilizer prices.
“We expect around 14,000 farmers to apply under the first scheme for high fuel prices, while all producers will be eligible to apply under the second,” he said.
The Agriculture Ministry said in September that, under EU rules, no beneficiary may receive more than EUR 50,000 under the so-called “Iran aid”.
According to the Ministry, more than EUR 100 million of the total package will support 14,861 Bulgarian farmers affected by higher diesel prices, while the remaining amount will go to nearly 41,000 farms to compensate for increased fertilizer costs.
