Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev called for stronger international cooperation against organized crime in his speech at the 13th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime in Vienna, the Interior Ministry’s press service said in a press release on Monday.
Demerdzhiev is on a working visit to Austria. He confirmed Bulgaria’s readiness to deepen its partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
“Transnational organized crime is evolving faster than ever, utilizing new technologies, infiltrating the legitimate economy and undermining the security of our societies. Our response must be equally dynamic, united and resolute. It is not enough to neutralize the leaders of criminal groups – we must dismantle the entire infrastructure that supports their activities,” Demerdzhiev said, quoted in the press release.
The Minister reaffirmed Bulgaria’s support for the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime as a fundamental instrument for international cooperation. He highlighted the need for closer coordination, the timely exchange of information and the adaptation of joint actions to emerging threats, including cybercrime, illicit drug trafficking, human trafficking, corruption and environmental crimes.
Demerdzhiev highlighted the need to protect children and young people from becoming involved in criminal activity, as well as the importance of effective border management. In his view, sustainable results require strong law enforcement institutions, consistent policies on prevention and victim protection, and partnerships with civil society and the private sector.
During the forum, the Minister met with UNODC Executive Director Monica Juma. The two discussed strategic priorities and opportunities for deepening cooperation through joint initiatives, the exchange of expertise and the development of institutional capacity. Among the topics were closer professional ties in the fight against drug trafficking and cross-border crime.
The Minister reaffirmed Bulgaria’s ambition to play a more active role in shaping international policies to combat crime, according to the Interior Ministry.
“Bulgaria is ready to be an active and reliable partner of the UN, not only through political support, but also through expertise, concrete initiatives and practical results. We are convinced that security is a shared responsibility that requires joint action and sustainable international partnerships,” Demerdzhiev said.
Earlier Monday, Demerdzhiev and his Austrian counterpart Gerhard Karner discussed improving security in the Black Sea region and strengthening security cooperation between the two countries.
