Yoana Ilieva climbed to third place in the world sabre rankings after winning a silver medal at the first Fencing World Cup tournament of the season in Oran, Algeria, the Bulgarian Fencing Federation said on Tuesday. Prior to this competition, the fencer from the Svechnikov Fencing Club was ranked fourth, but her strong performance secured her a rise in the International Fencing Federation’s rankings.
Bulgaria’s top sabre fencer has reached number 3 in the rankings for the second time. In April 2025, she ranked among the world’s top three sabre fencers for the first time. Currently, the Bulgarian has 165,000 points, the same as the second-placed fencer in the rankings – Russia’s Alina Mikhailova. At number 1 in the International Fencing Federation rankings is Yana Egorian of Russia with 175,000 points.
“We congratulate Yoana on her latest breakthrough into the top three sabre fencers and wish her every success in becoming number one this season,” said the Bulgarian Fencing Federation.
