Russia is not winning on the battlefield in Ukraine, but is instead blatantly targeting civilians and stepping up hybrid attacks elsewhere in Europe, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas said during a Tuesday debate in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, on the escalation of Russian attacks on shipping in the Black Sea.
“The escalation in attacks in the Black Sea deserves specific attention. Six attacks in ten days by suspected Russian drones marks a dangerous and unacceptable escalation in the Black Sea,” she added.
Russia has stepped up its attacks on Ukrainian exports since mid-July, Kallas also said. According to some estimates, Ukraine is losing EUR 60 million a day in export revenue as a result, she said.
The Black Sea corridor is the most important route for Ukrainian wheat shipments, Kallas said. Russia is deliberately using food as a weapon and undermining global food security, she added.
Kallas said the European Council had called for the immediate restoration of safe civilian shipping in the Black Sea.
