An exhibition dedicated to the life and work of one of the significant figures in 20th-century Bulgarian sculpture, Vaska Emanuilova, will open at Sofia’s St Luke Gallery at 2 pm on Wednesday and run until November 5, the organizers said on Tuesday.
The exhibition, titled “Being a Sculptor. The Story of Vaska Emanuilova,” traces Emanuilova’s professional development through artworks, archival documents, photographs and personal accounts. It covers different stages of her life, from her childhood and studies at the Academy of Fine Arts to her involvement with the Society of New Artists and her trip to Paris.
Particular attention is given to the development of her work in portraiture, the nude, and sculpture in urban spaces.
The organizers said the exhibition presents Emanuilova not only as an artist but also as a woman and professional who established her own place in the history of Bulgarian art. Through documents and artworks, it explores how her individual creative path became part of the broader development of Bulgarian sculpture in the 20th century.
The exhibition is curated by Reneta Georgieva and Galina Dimitrova-Dimova. The materials come from the collection and archives of the Vaska Emanuilova Gallery.
Vaska Emanuilova (1905–1985) was among the first women to make a lasting contribution to Bulgarian sculpture. Born in the village of Komshtitsa in the Tsaribrod area, she graduated from the State Academy of Fine Arts in 1927, where she studied sculpture under Prof. Ivan Lazarov and drawing under Prof. Tseno Todorov.
In 1931, she was among the founders of the Society of New Artists, and in 1939 she specialized in sculpture in Paris. She worked mainly in small-scale sculpture, using plaster, bronze and terracotta. Portraits, nudes and genre compositions occupied a central place in her work. Emanuilova created sculptural portraits of a number of her contemporaries, including Iliya Petrov, Stoyan Venev, Ivan Nenov and Nenko Balkanski, and also produced monumental works. In February 1985, she donated 90 sculptures, 48 watercolours and 35 drawings to the Sofia City Art Gallery. After her death in July that year, a permanent exhibition of her works was opened.
In 2006, the Vaska Emanuilova Gallery was restored as a branch of the Sofia City Art Gallery at 15 Yanko Sakazov Blvd in Sofia. Her works are also held by the National Gallery, regional art galleries and private collections in Bulgaria and abroad.
