The message from European leaders following the important and productive European Council meeting is clear: Europe is reinforcing its competitiveness and is united in defending its interests and values, European Council President Antonio Costa said in an address to the European Parliament on Wednesday on the conclusions of the October 15-16 European Council meeting.
Debate focused on four essential priorities: competitiveness, the EU’s forthcoming financial framework, Ukraine and migration policy, Costa said.
According to him, the EU has made progress in implementing One Europe, One Market roadmap, but must now accelerate its efforts to achieve the goals it has set.
He said he would summon a meeting in February to discuss with EU leaders the progress made on competitiveness and defence.
“The cost of energy prices are at the heart of these efforts. Households and businesses are paying the price of a war that is taking place far from our borders,” the European Council President noted.
According to Costa, the war in the Middle East requires immediate measures to reduce the pressure on households and companies. The European Commission has proposed postponing methane regulations, developing a strategy for European refineries and reinforcing coordination of energy purchases.
In addition, plans are under way to coordinate the release of seven billion barrels of oil and diesel fuel at G7 level.
