Consumer Protection Commission (CPC) Chair Maya Manolova sent a report to the Chair of the Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC) regarding identified violations of the Protection of Competition Act, the CPC reported on Wednesday.
The violations concern discrimination by retail chains against business partners, involving different trade mark-ups on comparable agricultural and food products within the same product category, where the difference in trade mark-ups exceeds 10%.
The report identifies violations at various outlets of some of the major retail chains. The materials provided contain data on the application of different trade mark-ups to different suppliers within the same product category in the dairy products, fruit and vegetable classes, which is treated as a prohibited practice under the Protection of Competition Act.
At the CPC briefing on Tuesday, in response to a question from the media, Manolova said that the penalties for such violations amount to up to 10% of the turnover of the offending retail chain, the press release notes.
The CPC is providing this information in fulfilment of its legal obligation to notify the relevant specialized authorities of identified violations of other regulatory acts, the Commission stated.
On Tuesday, CPC Chair Maya Manolova announced at a briefing that the Commission had launched 11 proceedings into unjustified price increases for cheese, milk, tomatoes, cucumbers and other essential goods. As part of the proceedings, the retail chains will have the opportunity to demonstrate that the price increases during the period under investigation were justified, comparing October with August.
