Bulgaria’s government debt is BGN 68.057 billion (EUR 34.797 billion) in 2025, or 29.9% of the gross domestic product (GDP), the National Statistical Institute (NSI) reported on Wednesday.
According to NSI data, the country’s debt in 2024 amounted to BGN 48.851 billion (EUR 24.977 billion), or 23.8% of GDP.
In 2025, the General Government Institutional Sector reported a budget deficit of BGN 9.122 billion (EUR 4.664 billion), or 4% of GDP. The deficit in the Central Government sub-sector amounted to BGN 8.891 billion (EUR 4.546 billion), or 3.9% of GDP. The Local Government sub-sector recorded a deficit of BGN 223 million (EUR 114 million), while the deficit in the Social Security Funds sub-sector stood at BGN 8 million (EUR 4 million).
At the time of the press release, NSI has requested but not yet received a copy of the audit report of the Bulgarian National Audit Office regarding an extraordinary audit of road infrastructure projects in the public sector as assigned by a decision of the National Assembly of Bulgaria. Depending on the findings of that report and after an analysis, verification and validation by Eurostat, data on deficit and debt for the General Government sector and the Central Government sub-sector could be revised, says NSI.
