Continue the Change Will Request Another Extraordinary Parliamentary Sitting Next Wednesday on Pardon of Drug Traffickers 2026

Continue the Change (CC) will request another extraordinary parliamentary sitting next Wednesday to discuss the cases of pardoned convict Ognyan Atanasov, known as the “Petrich Escobar,” and a second drug dealer from Sliven, leader Assen Vassilev told a press briefing in Parliament after MPs twice failed to establish a quorum for today’s extraordinary sitting intended to examine the pardon granted to Atanasov.
The signatures requesting the extraordinary sitting will be collected from Democratic Bulgaria and GERB. The agenda has been expanded to include a second case from Sliven.
“We have also summoned Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev to the hearing to explain what the police are doing,” Vassilev said.
“For the second consecutive week, Progressive Bulgaria MPs have failed to turn up, preventing a quorum and making it impossible to establish what Iliana Iotova knew when she pardoned the drug traffickers,” he added.
According to Vassilev, the second pardon case is even more scandalous than the first.
“We have a pardon involving a drug dealer who was caught, convicted, released by the court to undergo medical treatment, and then caught a second time while receiving treatment,” Vassilev explained.
He added that, on the second occasion, the court deemed the man too dangerous to be released, and he was subsequently convicted again.
“He was convicted again, and Iotova decided that this person should be pardoned,” Vassilev said.
“If the allegations made by his former wife that he continues to sell drugs in Sliven and that the Interior Ministry does nothing despite calls to the 112 emergency number, are true, this means that Iotova’s actions have, for a second time, allowed a drug dealer to go free and continue distributing drugs to Bulgarian children and citizens,” he added.
Vassilev asked the governing parties whether they considered it acceptable to continue supporting a presidential candidate who, in his words, “clearly shows mercy to drug dealers but has no mercy for Bulgarian children and citizens.”
“If you think this is normal, then do not turn up for the third sitting we are convening next Wednesday either,” he said.
“There is an umbrella over drug trafficking and drug dealers in Bulgaria within the country’s security services and judicial system,” said Continue the Change floor leader Nikolay Denkov.
“Progressive Bulgaria is trying to claim that we are raising this issue solely because of the elections. That is not true,” he added.
“This is an issue that will not go away as long as people and children continue to die because of drugs. It is a disease of our society which, unfortunately, is being spread by those who are supposed to be fighting it,” Denkov said.
