Balgarianovinite.com Bulgaria, Greece, Romania and the European Commission signed in Brussels Wednesday evening a memorandum of cooperation on the development of transport infrastructure in the region. On behalf of Bulgaria, the document was signed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadjov.
“+This is a turning point for our region and for Europe. For decades, the idea of completing the North–South axis has remained only on paper,” Karadjov noted. He added that the signing of the memorandum is not a symbolic act but a commitment to opening new trade routes, overcoming border bottlenecks, and strengthening European resilience.
According to him, new bridges over the Danube are needed because they are important for the entire continent, not only for the three countries involved in the memorandum. The Deputy Prime Minister said that expanding the transport network in the region will also contribute to military mobility and create opportunities for investment.
EU Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas stated that the three countries have chosen to deepen cooperation, and in his words, this means that the area between the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea will no longer be Europe’s periphery. He said the new transport links will be essential for supply chains and for the movement of troops and equipment, extending from Greece to Moldova and Ukraine. The Commissioner added that a new Danube bridge near Ruse will contribute to mobility within the EU and NATO.
Tzitzikostas explained that by the end of 2026, a financing plan will be prepared for the projects under the next EU multiannual budget. He added that the memorandum will be politically binding. According to him, the future projects will provide the most strategic transport connections in Southeastern Europe.
