Balgarianovinite.com The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) found formetanate pesticide residues above the permitted level in an 11.6-tonne shipment of peppers imported from North Macedonia, BFSA said on Friday. The shipment entered through the Zlatarevo Border Checkpoint and was bound for a food business operator in Petrich.
The sample was collected during intensified border checks launched by BFSA in early August. The shipment was placed under official detention at the recipient’s premises and kept in refrigerated storage pending the laboratory results. Once the excessive pesticide levels were confirmed, BFSA ordered the shipment returned to the supplier. With the assistance of the Customs Agency, it was returned to its country of origin without entering the Bulgarian market.
The intensified border checks will continue. So far, 35 fresh vegetable samples have been tested, including 21 collected at the Zlatarevo Border Checkpoint and 14 at the Gyueshevo Border Checkpoint. They comprised 22 pepper samples and 13 tomato samples. The consignments originated from North Macedonia, Kosovo and Albania.
Since August 3, 2026, BFSA, together with the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Markets, the National Revenue Agency and the Interior Ministry, has been carrying out targeted inspections of the trade in tomatoes, peppers, peaches and watermelons across the country and at border checkpoints. The checks cover product safety, quality, origin and traceability. Inspectors verify the origin and traceability of consignments, compliance with quality requirements and marketing standards, and the labelling and accompanying documents for produce from Bulgaria, other EU countries and third countries. Samples are also collected for laboratory testing.
At border checkpoints, documentary, identity and physical checks are carried out, together with laboratory testing for pesticide residues.
BFSA will maintain the intensified controls on fresh fruit and vegetables to ensure that only products meeting safety and quality requirements reach consumers.
