Balgarianovinite.com Eight Bulgarian minority associations in southeastern Serbia will receive EUR 348,000 for 17 projects, the Bulgarian Consulate General in Nis said on Friday.
The grant agreements were signed on August 13 under the Programme for Support of Bulgarian Community Organizations Abroad in the presence of Consul General Dimitar Ivanov and Consul Alexander Ganchev.
Agreements were concluded with the Emblema Association in Tsaribrod, the GLAS Association in Bosilegrad, the Cultural and Information Centre in Nis, the Zvonce Cultural and Information Centre in Zvonce-Babusnica, the Bulgarian-Serbian Centre in Vranje, the Cultural and Information Centre in Bosilegrad, the ERMA Cultural and Information Centre in Pirot and the Cultural Alternative Association in Tsaribrod.
The documents were initialled on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs by Ivanov and Ganchev and by representatives of the Bulgarian associations and organizations in Serbia.
Ivanov said the funding was intended to develop cultural and educational activities and preserve the national identity of the Bulgarian community in Serbia.
The leaders of the associations and cultural and information centres expressed their gratitude for the trust and support. The Bulgarian community in Serbia broadly views the programme as an opportunity to step up efforts to preserve Bulgarian script, heritage, customs and culture.
The Western Outlands is the name used in Bulgaria for areas of present-day southeastern Serbia, including Bosilegrad and Tsaribrod, that remain home to ethnic Bulgarians. Bulgaria lost the territory under the 1919 Treaty of Neuilly after its defeat in World War I.
Serbia’s 2022 census counted 12,918 Bulgarians, about 30% fewer than in 2011. The National Council of the Bulgarian National Minority’s 2026-2031 strategy focuses on education, Bulgarian-language information, culture and the official use of the language and script.
