Bulgarian MEPs Andrey Novakov and Emil Radev of GERB/EPP are initiating a visit to Sofia and Varna by a delegation of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) over the next two weeks in connection with attacks on commercial vessels in the Black Sea, GERB’s press office said. The delegation will include members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defence, who will visit critical infrastructure related to public safety.
The two MEPs, together with their colleagues from the European Parliament’s Committee on Security and Defence, condemned the attacks on commercial vessels off the Bulgarian coast. In a joint video statement, representatives of the European People’s Party Group expressed solidarity with Bulgaria and called for concrete measures to ensure security in the Black Sea.
Andrey Novakov stressed, according to the statement, that the attacks are no longer solely a Bulgarian problem and require a coordinated European response. Emil Radev also emphasized the need for European support, warning of the risks to the Bulgarian economy and tourism, the party added. He also called for assistance from European partners and NATO allies to improve the protection of commercial shipping.
In this context, one of the proposals was to establish a European naval mission in the Black Sea, modelled on the EU’s Aspides mission. With a clearly defined defensive mandate, such a mission would escort and protect commercial vessels and their crews.
Tuesday morning, Prime Minister Rumen Radev reported new drone attacks against ships in the Black Sea and described them as absolutely unacceptable. One of the vessels was hit by three aerial drones 18 nautical miles east of Byala, while the other was hit 17 nautical miles east of Krapets.
